Ski Portillo + GoPro
oin GoPro athlete Chris Davenport as he takes us to one of the best lines in the world. Nestled in the Chilean Andes is Ski Portillo, an old mining town turned world-renowned ski resort home to some of South America’s best terrain. Just outside the ski area boundary is a couloir called the Super C. It’s a huge climb from the ski area, but it all pays off with a 1,320-meter descent.
Many film crews use helicopters to get to lines like the Super C, due to heavy camera gear. But it’s a right of passage to earn your turns on the Super C and in fact, taking a helicopter isn’t an option. By shooting 100 percent on GoPro and thanks to the small size of the camera, the GoPro media team was the first professional production team to climb and document the Super C.
Skiing in the Central Andes, and especially at Portillo, is a unique experience because it is all in the alpine-there are no trees anywhere,” says Chris Davenport. “And the mountain range is young, so its steep and craggy and perfect for expert freeride skiing. Plus you add the maritime snowpack to the mix and it’s a recipe for tons of fun. That’s the reason I’ve been returning to Portillo for 15 years in a row.”
Promo Communications hosted GoPro in Ski Portillo and helped facilitate the content creation on this project. Then, Promo lead the PR efforts, and pitched the film and behind-the-scenes stories to endemic ski media channels. The result was staggering.
